Meets Rishi Sunak and the family of a British Indian teen who died, accusing the police of misconduct

British Indian Teenager: The family of the victims of the Nottingham murders, British-Indian Grace O’Malley-Kumar and fellow student Barnaby Webber, have harshly criticized the police, claiming “mismanagement” in the investigation. The two families have declared that they “will not be silenced” and that they will keep voicing their “serious concerns” on the matter.

On June 13, 2023, Valdo Calocane fatally stabbed Grace O’Malley-Kumar, a fellow student, and 19-year-old Barnaby Webber, as well as school caretaker Ian Coates, close to the University of Nottingham.

The families released a unified statement on Monday, according to the Shropshire Star newspaper, in which they accused the Nottinghamshire Police of “gagging” the media in an effort to prevent information about case shortcomings from being disclosed.

The families of the victims reacted with shock and anger when Calocane, 32, was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order last month after prosecutors accepted his plea of guilty to manslaughter based on diminished responsibility. Psychiatrists claimed that Calocane suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. The verdict stated that Calocane would not face a murder trial due to “mental illness.”

They also criticized the police for sharing information about the murder victims on a WhatsApp group, which was revealed during a misconduct hearing.

“We’re not going to be quiet. The families said in a statement released on Monday that they were sending their “lengthy and detailed statement” to highlight their concerns and the continued mismanagement by the Nottingham Police. “This behavior must be addressed and urgent changes made as this must not happen again to other innocent families,” the families added.

The statement also said that at an off-the-record press conference last week, the police instructed the media that they were not allowed to report on the material that was discussed.

While waiting for a response from the Home Secretary, the families have written to Keir Starmer, the leader of the opposition, requesting a meeting with him and his shadow ministers.

The relatives have also requested a public investigation into the tragedy in a meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. They have a guarantee from PM Sunak that “we will get the answers.”

Attorney General Victoria Prentis, KC MP, said that the attempted murder and manslaughter by diminished responsibility sentences were “unduly lenient” and that the Court of Appeal would hear the case.

Recall that Jaahnavi Kandula, an Indian student in the United States, died after she was struck by a Seattle Police car that was being driven by Kevin Dave. Following inquiries and court cases, the authorities decided that there was not “sufficient” evidence to prosecute Dave and that he would not be charged with any crimes.
