Microsoft is once again invading Chrome for Windows users with “malware-like” pop-up advertisements

Microsoft is allegedly putting pop-ups in Google Chrome and asking users to switch to Bing once again. Microsoft originally debuted malware-like advertising last year, according to The Verge, which had a prompt that appeared over the top of other ads and windows.

These pop-ups advertise the tech company’s AI-powered chatbot and Bing search engine. The aforementioned alerts were halted by Microsoft to remedy the “unintended behavior” after considerable criticism of the aggressive Bing advertising. However, with Windows 10 and 11, the pop-ups have reappeared.

Numerous users of Windows have reported seeing an advertisement for Bing AI and its search engine inside the Google Chrome browser. The notice reads, “Chat with GPT-4 on Chrome for free! Use Bing AI to get hundreds of conversation turns per day.

Microsoft will download its Chrome extension and establish Bing as the default search engine when you click “yes” on the promoted message. The pop-up itself is less problematic, however. Windows users were really worried because of the notification’s uncanny similarity to malware. As a result, some people began to doubt the accuracy of the message, which finally prompted Microsoft to respond.

Now that the ad pop-ups have been resolved, Microsoft’s Director of Communications, Caitlin Rouston, has said that they are a one-time notice. “This is a one-time notification giving people the choice to set Bing as their default search engine on Chrome,” Rouston stated in an official statement to The Verge. She went on to say that Microsoft respects choice, which is why it’s easy to ignore the message. “We believe in giving our customers options, so there is a way to ignore the notification,” Roulston said in closing.

_BCILauncher.EXE_ or _BingChatInstaller.EXE_ are server-side processes that have been connected to the present pop-up problem. On March 13, these processes were introduced to certain Windows PCs, and users are unable to easily disable this notice.

Microsoft also had to solve a problem earlier this year when Edge was taking user authorization for automatically importing browsing data from Chrome tabs. Although the problem was subsequently fixed, some customers still find the company’s persistent use of Bing advertising strategies offensive.

Microsoft and OpenAI have partnered to put the company ahead of the competition in AI-based development. Additionally, this has allowed the industry leaders in software to test the most recent ChatGPT versions ahead of time. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella called OpenAI “one of the high-ambition technology innovation companies” in a recent podcast.
